Aloha e kuʻu GLOBAL HULA ʻOHANA!

You are all invited to dance in our 2021 Lei Day Hōʻike! You may choose to dance multiple hula or you may only want to participate in one song. It is entirely up to you! Please donʻt feel pressured to participate - this is just supposed to be something fun to celebrate our Global Hula ʻOhana together.

Program of Hula:

Attire / Costume -

Since we are dancing from all over the world, we will be mismatched but it will be beautiful! Feel free to wear muʻumuʻu, aloha shirt, paʻu skirt, or any other outfit that you feel comfortable dancing in! If you will be using a costume from another hālau, please be sure that you have permission from your kumu to use it in the video recording which will be shared publicly. You may want to wear the same thing for multiple videos or change costumes. Either option is fine!

Lei -

Please wear some sort of LEI for all hula videos. Your Lei may be made of fresh flowers, artificial flowers or foliage, kukui nuts, shells, paper, anything youʻd like!

Hair -

Any style is fine, as long as we can see your SMILE :)

Optional LIVE Video Recording on Oʻahu - April 23, 2021

  • We will meet at Magic Island Park (Diamond Head Side, toward the Point) on Friday, April 23 at 5:00pm for a quick review of all songs and Film from 5:45-7pm

  • Please arrive already dressed and ready to film

  • Weather permitting

At-Home Video Recording Tips

  • Record the video using a cell phone or camera rather than laptop webcam, if possible.

  • Please record your videos in Landscape / Horizontal mode.

  • Camera should be propped up on a sturdy base or tripod and is best if the camera is placed at around your eye level rather than resting on the floor or at table height.

  • Avoid backlighting, we want to be able to see your SMILE

  • Center your body in the frame so that hands will not be cut off with arms overhead or stretched to the sides

  • Please dance along with the provided VIDEOS so that the timing of music will match up

  • After you record your video, name each file as follow:

    • LAST NAME FIRST NAME SONG NAME

    • Some examples:

      • Williams Lauren Lei Hoʻoheno

      • Curtis Cyan Lei Pua Melia

      • Chang Wendy May Day is Lei Day

  • Upload your video to THIS FOLDER & email kumu@napuhala.com to let us know that you have submitted. You should receive a confirmation within 24 hours.

  • You do not need to submit all files at once, you may submit individually as you finish each video.
