Makee ʻAilana

Did you know that Kapiolani Park didnʻt always look like it does today? In the early 1900s the area was marshy and overgrown. The swamp areas were dotted by islands - some of them were given names and the largest of those was located around the spot where the Honolulu Zooʻs entrance now stands. That particular island was named for Captain James Makee, who was influential in planning for the first iteration of the Kapiolani Parkʻs development.

This mele was written for the Makeeʻs Island, a popular destination for lovers. It is a classic hula, written by James K. Iʻi.
