Meʻe ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi: Puakea Nogelmeier
ʻO kēia ka lā mua o Pepeluali - ʻoia hoʻi ʻo ka lā mua o ka Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi. He manawa kēia e hoʻopaipai a e hoʻoikaika i kou kākou ʻōlelo a e hoʻomaʻamaʻa kākou i nā me i poina ʻia. E huikala mai i nā mea hewa, he hoʻāʻo wale nō!
This is the first day of February - the first day of Hawaiian Langauge month. It is a time for us to encourage and strengthen our language and to practice the things we have forgotten. Please forgive any wrong doings, we are just trying!
This month we honor the Haku Mele (Composer) Puakea Nogelemeier. Kumu Kanoe had the honor of working for Kawaihuelani Center for Hawaiian Language and Puakea was one of her favorite kumu during that time. Although is ʻōlelo was light years beyond what she would every hope to achieve he always treated her with utmost respect. As the secretary of the department he always referred to her as the Boss or the Queen. High praise coming from a #meeolelohawaii such as himself.
We will cover two of his mele “Pua Hīnano” and “Ka Nohona Pili Kai”
